Emma: Volume II, Chapters 11-18

I'm starting to like Emma more. I think it may be due to our shared hatred for Mrs. Elton. She is rather annoying (what a perfect trade for Frank Churchill, right?). I love how Austen makes it evident that the other characters besides her protagonist dislike her as well-- "She was stopped by a slight fit of coughing, and Mr. Weston instantly seized the opportunity of going on... They were interrupted. Tea was carrying around, and Mr. Weston, having said all that he wanted, soon took the opportunity of walking away."

Thank goodness Mr. Knightley admitted to not liking Jane.

I don't think I want Frank Churchill to make his return.

I flipped to the back of the book, where there is supplementary material, and I was overjoyed to see that one of my other favorite authors, E.M. Forster, was a Jane Austenite. I like what he had to say about her: "...But Jane Austen is so different. She is my favorite author! I read and re-read, the mouth open and the mind closed. Shut up in measureless content, I greet her by the name of most kind hostess, while criticism slumbers."

  1. I once saw a live version of Emma and the girl who played Mrs. Elton did such a good job, I still shudder when I see the poor girl who played her!

  2. Oh, I can imagine! I'm a theatre major at school, and I've played some "villains" before. I think she would be fun to play.

I have heard of the play adaption of Emma. Was it any good?

  3. It was very good! It was the neatest little production, it was done by a local high school and they set up round tables and had tea and cookies served by the actors in costume during intermission. I went with my older sis and a couple friends, I was very surprised at how close to the book it stuck and thought it was very well done.=)
