"Emma's very good opinion of Frank Churchill was little shaken the following day, by hearing that he was gone off to London, merely to have his hair cut. A sudden freak seemed to have seized him at breakfast, and he had sent for a chaise and set off intending to return to dinner, but with no more important view that appeared than having his hair cut." What a way to start of a chapter, Miss Austen! I think I actually laughed out loud at that. It may seem like something incredibly mundane to write, but I find it funny.
This odd sort of love square that's going on between Emma, Mr. Knightley, Frank Churchill, and Jane is also quite amusing. Mr. Knightley will always argue against Frank because Emma likes him, but I don't blame him. Frank is rather conceited and vain (when Emma asks if he regretted wasting a whole day simply to get his hair cut, he responds with a nonchalant no, saying that he never sees his friends unless he is fit to be seen. What a git). Of course Emma already dislikes Jane, but it's funny how she really gets riled up about her when Jane and Mr. Knightley are spoken about in conjunction or when Mr. Knightley compliments Jane. She became quite defensive when Mrs. Weston mentioned the idea of them getting together, enough to the point where I was smiling. It's too bad that I already know that Emma and Knightley get together; maybe I would read faster if I didn't.
Emma and Frank are a little malicious with the whole who-really-sent-the-paino-forte-to-Jane affair. "Oh it's Irish music that was sent with it, was it, eh *wink wink, nudge nudge*." Could you be any more obvious, Frank? It's too bad that Emma has a partner in crime now.
One good thing that I have found about Emma so far, which I promised I would try to find, is that she doesn't become pompous when she realizes that Jane is more accomplished than her. Instead of trying to deny the fact, she states it to anyone who says otherwise and then tries to improve her talents. I like that.
Also, Miss Bates is hilarious. I love when she gets two full-page ramblings about nothing.
