At the moment I really can't understand why Emma hates Jane so much. The only logical explanation that I can think of is that, subconsciously, Emma sees her as a threat. They are both the same age, both accomplished in the same things, and both attractive (though from the description Austen gives, I might lean towards the idea that perhaps Jane is better-looking than Emma, though there has been no physical description of Emma yet, so...). I love how Emma got upset when Mr. Knightley decided to leave with Jane and her aunt-- shows that she subconsciously likes Mr. Knightley.
Poor Harriet. Poor, poor Harriet. I know exactly how she feels. It's hard to try to forget someone when you are constantly reminded of them. I can't even begin to imagine how it must feel to try and forget two men.
On that note, I really liked how Austen wrote Harriet's encounter with Mr. Martin and his sister. Having her practically burst into Hartfield to tell Emma the story set the tone nicely. It was wonderful how she didn't try to make it eloquent. Being the frantic non-stop stream that flowed from Harriet showed how much it upset her and how much she still cares for Mr. Martin. It was kind of a breath of fresh air.
Finally Frank Churchill arrives! Hopefully we'll have some excitement now.
