I am taking a short pause from my reading to write some things before I get too far and forget.
First, how is Mr. Knightley related to the Woodhouses? If John Knightley is Emma's brother, then what does that make Mr. Knightley (also, does he have a first name; is it ever mentioned)? I feel like I must have missed something in the beginning (another problem with the lengthy family history lessons... but Mr. Knightley's introduction was only a paragraph long, wasn't it?). I know I can easily search this on the internet, but I want to get back to reading and just let my head continue to spin from the fact that he might not just be a friend.
Second, another reason to dislike Emma: she's all talk and no action. I wanted to laugh out loud during Mrs. Weston and Mr. Knightley's conversation about Emma making lists of books she wanted to read when she was a teenager and then never seeing through with it. And then later when Emma is going to draw Harriet, it is revealed that she has always wanted to try to use every medium but could never be accomplished in just one, that she didn't have the motivation for it. Oh, typical Emma.
Maybe my goal should be to find at least one endearing thing about this heroine. So far all I like is that we both have hazel eyes.
Okay, back to it!
I remember wondering about a first name as well, so I paid attention when I finally made myself reread it. He does have one and I'm pretty sure it's only mentioned once. I'll leave the finding out of it to you though, maybe it will motivate you to read faster!=)
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling it will come right at the very end. haha
ReplyDeleteI don't want to give away how they are related, but it comes up pretty quickly!~
ReplyDeleteI love this idea and if I can dig out my copy of Emma, I'll join in on the read!
Oh, definitely join in if you can! I didn't really expect people to be commenting on these entries, but I think it's great. I love the discussion.
