Does anyone else find Lucy excessively annoying? I know she means well, and she doesn't know about Elinor's attachment to Edward, but every time she opens her mouth to gush or whine about Edward I want to tell her to shut up. She doesn't do anything wrong, but I find that I'm just always very much irritated by her. Maybe it's just because I'm on Elinor's side. I wanted to snap back at her when she tried to sting Marianne though, but Marianne not realizing the blow she attempted to make is a much greater back-hand than what she could have said if she was conscious of it. Genius.
And Marianne standing up for Elinor in front of Mrs. Ferras! I love how these sisters are always there for each other. I wish I had more of Marianne's fearlessness.
Jane Austen writes so wonderfully even on the smallest details: "From a night of more sleep than she had expected, Marianne awoke the next morning to the same consciousness of misery in which she had closed her eyes."
I know I just read a whole volume, but I feel like I have nothing to say. I think it might be due to the fact that this is my fourth or fifth time reading this one (can you tell it's my favorite?) and nothing's really shocking me like Emma did. So I'm going to make this post somewhat of an open discussion; Volume II is the visit to London up until the Steeles being invited to stay with Fanny and John. Anything you'd like to talk about?
Yes, Lucy is very annoying!! Though I do feel sorry for her, Fanny was being so nice to her, then wham!
ReplyDeleteI do wish I was more fearless, but the couple times I've done things like that, it has not ended well!:-O
"Fearlessness" and "naïvety" go hand in hand, especially with Marianne. She doesn't consider the consequences and Elinor, being older and more mature, is always going to at least hesitate before doing something like that, because she is going to think of propriety first, while Marianne just wants to get her thoughts out regardless.
ReplyDeleteLucy always bothered me lol i think the description of her having "small shifty eyes" (something like that :/) always got to me
ReplyDeleteKatySue- Lucy does get the short end of the stick, doesn't she? Could you imagine what would have happened if Fanny had just invited her sister in-laws like John wanted to? I do feel sorry for her too.
ReplyDeleteNatalie- You are absolutely right. I really like those two things to describe Marianne. She has a fearless naivety, perhaps?
Ginny- I agree that the description of Lucy (and her sister) plays into her being mildly unlikable. Austen always makes them sound so inferior to Marianne and Elinor.
